Part 8 Restoration of a 1974 Jeep CJ5 - The Fuel Tank

 Part 8 Restoration of a 1974 Jeep CJ5 - The Fuel Tank

The original fuel tank had a layer of sludge, rust and dirt. The previous owner had installed a temporary fuel tank that the jeep was running with. I removed the temporary tank and cleaned and flushed the original.
I cleaned it as well as I could with Dawn dish soap and flushed it with fresh water several times.
It was removed. I dumped 3 gallons of white vinegar and let it sit over night.
I then flushed it again.
I added a box of Baking Soda and flushed it well to neutralize the vinegar.

I was given a half of a can of Red-Kote. I purchased a new can and used both cans to coat the interior, following the manufacturers instructions.

The fuel tank Guard was removed, wire wheeled, and primed (Summit Racing™ PBE Self-Etching Primer 15 Oz. Flat Gray/Silver SUM-SP1105), then painted two coats of  Summit Racing™ Chassis Paint 16 Oz. Semi-gloss Black SUM-SP1402

One badly rusted corner was repaired buy welding new 18 gauge sheet metal on.
