Part 19 Restoration of a 1974 Jeep CJ5 - The Plow
Part 19 Restoration of a 1974 Jeep CJ5 - The Plow
The Jeep came with a Fisher 4 way plow.
Model - E47
The turn signals frustrated me enough yesterday that I decided to leave them alone for a while. Then I wound up working on the bumpers and plow instead of wiring. I managed to get some new brackets cut. The plan was to get everything welded, redrilled and figured out the wiring and hydraulics.
The frame needs some work. Here you can see 2 pieces of angle iron suspended into no where. These will get cut off.
I measured for the location of the plow frame that was welded to the front bumper and then cut the frame off. I will need to devise a solution so it is either pinned or bolted so the plow can be removed without removing the bumper with it
Reinstallation
I basically had to troubleshoot every part of this reinstallation. First because I lacked a thorough understanding of it, and second, it had multiple issues.
Day 3, or is it day 4 of trouble shooting this snow plow. It’s become a blur. Up and down worked when I started taking it apart. But not now! It’s a multitude of issues. First it took me a while to figure out I was missing the hot wire to the switches. After adding that back in the mix it looked like the solenoid is working. Still no up and down though. The motor would not turn over. I pulled it to find what was in the photo. It was froze solid. It took some force to break it free, but it seems there is a dead short. I ordered a new one. I can see why it may not work, but I’m a little unsure how it worked before .
The side to side coil is also dead. I ordered a new one along with the valve. I knew the side to side didn’t work when i brought it.
The plow frame is painted and back together. It’s been fixed so Everything is bolted instead of welded so it can actually be removed if needed, in multiple pieces which will be a whole lot easier.
Progress. And another learning expensive experience. I’m working on my doctorate of calamity.
coils:
A coil - smaller coil usually in the back. Lets the weight of the plow lower it.
B coil. Side to side movement.
C coil. Raises the plow.
