Checkered Hophornbeam 64″ recurve Selfbow

Checkered Hophornbeam 64″ recurve Selfbow

  • Bow name – Checkered 64″ HopHornBeam
  • 48# @ 28″
  • 64″ tip to tip
  • Bone Overlays
  • The bow is also died with Fiebing’s Leather Dye
  • Belly was heat treated into a slight recurve
  • Final weight, 17.6 oz

When you heat treat a bow reducing moisture and you change the cell structure on the belly. the cells shrink the belly gets harder and becomes lighter. This helps you gain draw weight and the wood becomes lighter – more power to the arrow.

I have seen up to 10# added to a draw weight from heat treating the bow.

This is also known as tempering a bow.

To heat treat the bow I set the heat gun in the jig. The first setting is timed and left until the wood is slightly charred. Then move the heat gun so a slight overlap is formed. Repeat the process for the entire length.

Bare shafted tested with  54# @ 28 1/2″ long, 190gr point
